Measuring Energy Usage in Parallel Software/Hardware

The Adept Project held a Bird of a Feather Workshop at ISC14 on Tuesday, June 24, 2014. The abstract for the event was:

"The EC-funded Adept project addresses the challenge of energy-efficient use of parallel technologies. We will present early results in measuring the power usage of parallel software and hardware, following three clear strands:

  1. Adept is developing benchmarks to help attribute power usage to specific components in a parallel application. We will present our advances in getting accurate and meaningful measurements (as well as the challenges faced), and discuss the value of the information that can be gained.
  2. To measure the power usage of parallel software to a high resolution, we need to either instrument the hardware or rely on vendor-exposed energy usage information. We will discuss our methodology, and compare accuracy and reliability of different measurement techniques.
  3. We will consider "performance vs. energy usage" metrics, which important in order to directly compare different types of software applications running on different hardware architectures, and to quantify the performance/energy trade-off.

The BoF will consist of three short talks on each of the three strands, followed by a moderator-led discussion."

Measuring Energy Usage In Parallel Software & Hardware

Hardware PowerEnergy Measurement

Efficient Modelling of Parallel Computer Systems Workshop

A Workshop held in conjunction with HiPEAC 2014, 21st January 2014, Vienna (Austria)

Background

The EU FP7 project Adept addresses the challenge of energy‐efficient use of parallel technologies. Adept builds on the expertise of software developers from high‐performance computing (HPC) to exploit parallelism for performance, and on the expertise of embedded systems engineers in managing energy usage. The aim of Adept is to develop tools and methodologies that will guide software developers and help them to model and predict performance and power consumption of parallel software and hardware.

In line with the project goals this workshop will bring together experts from the HPC and embedded domains to discuss the current state‐of‐the‐art and research in the area of performance and power modelling and monitoring of parallel computer systems. Specific emphasis will also be given to the cross‐fertilisation of expertise between the two domains.
